About Andrew Bechara

Andrew Bechara is the Founder and Principal Psychologist at Wiser Minds Psychology. He works with adolescents and adults across therapy and psychological assessment, including ADHD, autism and cognitive assessment, by telehealth Australia-wide and with in-person options in Western Sydney.

For more than half a decade, a substantial part of his clinical work has been within the NDIS, supporting participants, families, Support Coordinators and other professionals. That experience has given him a grounded understanding of the psychological and practical challenges that can come with living with disability, and of how therapy, assessment and reporting fit together within the scheme. His broader work is not limited to disability or the NDIS: he sees Medicare and private clients across the same range of everyday concerns.

In his own words

I became a psychologist because I saw a gap, not in people's ability to change, but in the support available to help them actually do it.

Psychology works best when it's practical. When sessions translate directly into shifts in how you're living. When the work done in a room, or on a screen, carries over into a Monday morning, a difficult conversation, a decision that would have gone differently six months ago.

“Understanding the pattern is the first step. Change begins with what you do next.”

The relationship stays direct and consistent. Andrew responds to the enquiry, has the first conversation and provides the ongoing work.

I grew up in a family where resilience wasn't a concept, it was just what you did. You kept moving. That upbringing built real strength, but it also meant a lot of people I knew had no real framework for their inner world. They knew something wasn't working. They didn't have a clear path forward.

That experience, and what I saw throughout my training and clinical work, shaped how I practise. I want our work to be useful, and connected to your actual week. Often that means concrete steps to try between sessions. Sometimes, especially early on, it means slowing down long enough to understand what is really going on before deciding what to do about it. Both are real progress, and either way the work keeps its direction: we stay clear on what we are working toward, and we review it as we go.

You do not need to arrive with clear goals. Plenty of people begin knowing only that something is not working, and clarifying what matters is often the first thing we do together. From there, I'll listen carefully, I'll be honest with you when something isn't serving you, and I'll adapt the pace and the approach to fit you.

Outside of sessions, I'm building something I believe in, a practice that takes psychology seriously as a tool for real life, not just crisis management.

Working within the NDIS

NDIS work teaches you things no textbook covers. The clearest lesson: good therapy often stalls simply because it was never adapted to the person in front of it.

So I adapt it. Sessions might be shorter, more visual, more concrete, or paced differently. Strategies get practised, not just discussed, and where it helps, family members or support workers are brought into the loop so skills survive outside the room. The goals are functional ones: getting through a conflict without shutting down, building a routine that holds up on a bad week, speaking up at an appointment, catching the bus. And when a report is needed, I write it in plain language, grounded in what I actually assessed, in terms the NDIA can use.

The Wiser Minds approach

We live in an era of unprecedented access to information, yet mental health continues to decline. The knowledge was never the missing piece. What makes the difference is someone who walks through it with you. Someone who holds you accountable. Someone who helps you translate what you're learning into what you're actually doing, week by week, step by step. A little wiser every day. Wiser together.
